Resource Review Thursday: A Year of Parenting Books

Hardcover book gutter and pagesCan it really be the nearing the end of the year already? Launching The Parent Vortex was one of my Resolutions for 2010, and I’m amazed that almost a year has passed since I started writing here.

Over the year I’ve read and reviewed lots and lots of parenting books. Many of them are about discipline, attachment, or the more psychological side of parenting. I have to admit, after doing my BA in Psychology I do love to read and think about the psychological side of parenting. Other books are full of ideas for crafts and activities, essays and reflections on motherhood itself, how to defuse toddler tantrums or playfully relate to your kids.

I’ve gathered all my reviews of parenting books together and linked them up here. And a standard disclaimer: links are to my reviews on The Parent Vortex, not affliliate links.

Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child – John Gottman

The Creative Family – Amanda Blake Soule

Raising Your Spirited Child – Mary Sheedy Kurcinka

The New Speaking of Sex – Meg Hickling

Mommy Wars – Leslie Morgan Steiner

The Happiest Toddler on the Block – Dr. Harvey Karp

The Parent’s Guide to Play – Dr. Wendy S. Masi and Dr. Roni Cohen Leiderman

How to Talk so Kids Will Listen – Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish

Secrets of the Baby Whisperer – Tracy Hogg (I’ll give you a hint for this one – it’s not a positive review.)

The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers – Elizabeth Pantley

The Toddler’s Busy Book – Trish Kuffner

Beyond Time Out – Beth Grosshans

Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves – Naomi Aldort

Playful Parenting – Dr. Lawrence Cohen

What is your favourite parenting book? What books do you think I should review next? I’m always on the lookout for more resources to review, so hit me with your best ideas! And thanks for reading this past year. I am really looking forward to building up the community and resources at The Parent Vortex in the coming year.

    Hi Michelle!

I hopped over from your guest post at codenamemama website.

Wow! Thank your for sharing this post! I’m so inspired with it. I used to think that breastfeeding has to go if we’re planning on the next child – until I came across an article in kellymom website which dispels this myth. Since then I do not think anymore or let doubts trouble me.. I’m still breastfeeding my 21 months old boy now, and as for the next one, I do hope to be like you, to be able to tandem nurse as long as we can.

Btw, am following your blog now! You are truly an inspiration!

Hi Jenny – That’s great to hear that you’re not worried about tandem nursing! I know it can work out differently for different women – some wean anyway if their milk dries up, but it’s different for everyone. Thanks for offering some book suggestions too. I’ll check them out.
